Texas Military Institute Ends San Marcos Academy’s Winning Streak

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The Texas Military Institute Panthers (2-5) upset the San Marcos Academy Bears 19-7 in San Antonio Thursday night handing the Bears their first loss of season, and first district loss.

SMA (5-1) began the season on a 5 game winning streak, which was interrupted by the bye week, which may have cost the Bears some momentum going forward.

The Bears started slow, gaining only 4 yards in the first quarter, on multiple possessions. Multiple penalties cost the Bears field possession, which the Panthers capitalized on early in the game.

Panther senior running back Milton Black scored the games first points with 8:39 left in the first to make the score 7-0 after a successful extra point. Junior Panther quarterback Drew Fox extended the lead with 14:04 left in the 2nd quarter on a 21-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 13-0. Bear lineman Sabas Castillo blocked the extra point attempt.

The Bears defense came up short on a controversial 4th and Goal play on the Panther 1 yard line, when Black punched in his second touchdown of the game to make the score 19-0 after an unsuccessful 2-point conversion.

Junior quarterback Cole Williams, scored the Bears only points of the night on a 47 yard touchdown run during the second quarter of the Bears 19-7 loss, which was the Bears first loss of the season.

Cole Williams scored the only points of the night for the Bears with 8:29 left in the 2nd quarter on a 47 yard touchdown run to make the score 19-7, after a successful PAT.

Senior Aubrey Oswalt, grabbed his district leading 4th interception of the season with 7:47 left in the half, to give SMA a chance to trim the lead, which came up short after an unsuccessful Bear drive in the red zone.

Senior Aubrey Oswalt intercepted his district leading 4th pass late in the 2nd quarter to give the Bears a chance to trim the 19-7 lead, which ended up being the final score, handing the Bears their first loss of the season.

The Bears went into halftime losing 19-7 with multiple injuries, including senior linebacker Richard Smith, and junior lineman Marshall Benson, who are key components to the Bears defense, which has not allowed 19 points all season in any one game.

Grimaldo DaRocha recovered a fumble for the Bears with 11:10 left in the 3rd quarter, but the Bears were not able to capitalize. The two defenses continued to now allow either team to score, however the Bears offense could not help out the strong defense. Junior quarterback Cole Williams threw an interception with 8:34 left in the game, which sealed the deal for the game as the Panthers would run out a large majority of the clock.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis, stated his disappointment in the Bears, but took full responsibility for the loss.

“Unfortunately I did a poor job of getting this team prepared,” Davis said. “TMI outplayed, and outcoached us in every aspect of the game. They did everything they needed to do to win, and we did not. “

Last year, the Bears dropped a 27-13 decision to the Panthers in a hard fought game. SMA Head Coach Les Davis said he knows that beating TMI will not be an easy task.

“TMI will be a good test for us as we begin district play,” Davis said. “They are always a very physical, hard-nosed and aggressive football team.”

Kickoff between the Bears and Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m.at TMI’s San Antonio campus.

The Hornets scored with 10 seconds left in the game on a 9-yard touchdown run by senior Dillon Lee, and a successful 2-point conversion made the score 33-14 Bears.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis, saw a different team tonight than the team that lost to Louise last year by such a large margin.

“Tonight was a great team win for the Bears,” Davis said. “It was good to play such a physical game. We got a little shell-shocked early during the game, but our guys responded well. It is always good going into a bye week undefeated, but we are going to take the week and work hard toward our next game. There are still many things we need to improve on.”

Louise Head Coach Brent Tritschler was disappointed in the amount of mistakes that the Hornets made throughout the night.

“Our team played hard tonight,” Tritschler said. “I am disappointed that we made too many mistakes and turnovers, but all credit has to go to SMA they have a great team.”

SMA Bears Look To Remain Undefeated

The San Marcos Academy Bears will look to keep their record perfect when they travel to play the UIL Louise Hornets Friday night.

The Bears (4-0), will not have the daunting task of stopping former Hornet running back Desmond Pulliam, who is currently playing at the University of Houston. Last year Pulliam rushed for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns on 14 carries against the Bears.

The Hornets (1-3) have struggled to replace Pulliam, losing the first three games of the season against Danbury, Van Vleck and Burton before pulling out a 48-0 victory against Woodsboro on September 16. The Hornets allowed 106 points during those 4 games, while only scoring 85.

SMA Offensive Coordinator Barrick Nealy, has helped junior quarterback Cole Williams pass for close to 400 yards during the Bears 4-0 season. The Bears look to remain undefeated Friday night against Louise.

The Bears continue to excel in all areas, averaging 128 passing yards per game behind junior quarterback Cole Williams who has completed 60 percent of his attempted passes.

The Bears’ opponents have seen 10 different players rush the ball this season,  including juniors Estevan Gutierrez and Ty Merriweather, who are tied for the team lead in touchdowns with 5 each. Merriweather said the key to the Bears coming away with a victory will be not committing turnovers.

“We are a completely different team from last year” Merriweather said. “If we stick to our game plan and do not commit turnovers, the score will be a lot different than last year.”

SMA Head Coach Les Davis has guided the SMA Bears to a 4-0 record with strong defense, offense and special teams. The Bears look to remain undefeated Friday night against Louise.
