Podcast: Wrapping up the 2011 High School Regular Season in Hays County

Well, another regular season has come and gone in high school football. There were a few outstanding moments this year, especially the epic 28-27 barnburner between the Rebels and Lobos earlier in the year.

However, it’s time to get serious; It’s playoff time. Or, as we like to call it in Texas, “The Second Season”. In Hays County, a couple of teams have played well enough to earn a chance to continue their seasons.

In this podcast, I’ll discuss how a few Hays County high school football teams fared in 2011, as well as talk about both playoff bound teams.

SMA Ends Season With A Loss

SAN MARCOS, TX

The San Marcos Academy Bears (5-5) ended their season Friday night at A+ FCU-Ingram Stadium losing to the Hyde Park Baptist Panthers 31-7. The Panthers improve to 6-4 on the year. The event, which was “Senior Night” for the Bears, marked the second consecutive year the Bears season has ended with a loss to the Panthers.

The Bears and Panthers traded punts to start the game, as the running game grinded the first quarter clock. The Panthers struck first with a 6-yard touchdown run by Daniel King with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter. The PAT by Junior Jansen Tapia made the score 7-0 Panthers going into the 2nd quarter.

Bear Junior running back Estevan Gutierrez had a 50 yard run with 11:25 left in the second quarter. This would set up a Ricardo Amescua 1 yard touchdown with 7:16 left. Gutierrez, kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7.

Junior Estevan Gutierrez rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries during the Bears season finale friday night against Austin Hyde Park. The Bears ended the season at 5-5, with Gutierrez rushing for close to 600 yards with 9 touchdowns on the season.

A sideline infraction penalty by the Bears set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Junior Daniel King. A successful PAT by Tapia put the panthers up 14-7.

The Panthers scored with 46.2 seconds left in the half on a 21 yard pass from Freshman David Dunkin to Sophomore Ryan Roberts. A successful PAT made the score 21-7.

The Bears had a chance to score, after a Hyde Park unsportsmanlike penalty, but Quarteback Cole Williams threw an interception with 8 seconds left to go into the half down 21-7.

The Bears held the Panthers on their first possession of the half. The Bears were not able to capitalize on the defensive stop. Tapia added a 25-yard field goal for the Panthers with 3:38 left in the third quarter making the score 24-7 Panthers.

Panther Sophomore Jackson Effiom scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with 11:55 left in the game to extend the panther lead to 31-7 after a successful PAT.

San Marcos Academy Coach Les Davis was proud of his team despite the loss on Senior night.

“We had some great efforts from our players this year,” Davis said. “They should be proud of their season. Their effort was good tonight, despite being out of bullets due to injuries.”

Sabas Castillo, SMA Offensive and Defensive lineman from San Marcos,TX believes the team is strong going forward.

“Our seniors laid good groundwork for the foundation of this program,” Castillo said. “That has shown with our seniors having a winning season two out of the last three season, with one playoff appearance.”

SMA Looks To Finish Out Its 2011 Football Season With A Victory

SAN MARCOS, TX

2011-SMA-Bears

Last year the San Marcos Academy Bears were in the same position. The Bears started out strong in non-district play, but struggled in district play, ending the season against Austin Hyde Park  with a 42-7 loss. This year, the Bears (5-4) want to change the ending of the story by finishing out the season, which has been a roller coaster with the Bears due to injuries.

The Panthers (5-4) come into the game with a two game winning streak with victories over TMI-The Episcopal School and Pope John Paul II out of Corpus Christi, which both handed SMA losses earlier in the season. The Panthers only district loss was against San Antonio Christian, who claimed the district title last week in their 39-0 win over SMA.

The Bears will look to stop Sophomore Panther running back Dustin Quigley. Quigley rushed for 214 yards and four scores as the Panthers knocked off a previously undefeated PJP II team.

The Bears, struggling as of late to move the ball and maintain good field position, will look to pass and run the ball like they did in the beginning of the season, which gave them five consecutive wins to start the season. The Bears are averaging 96 pass yards per game and 184 rush yards per game.

Injuries hit the Bears hard this season with starting running back Ty Merriweather, kicker Memo Borrego, receiver Devante Williams, Linebacker Won Jae Jeong, lineman Min Jae Jeong, and Safety Nick Nelson all sustaining season ending injuries throughout the course of the year.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis stated this game is important for a variety of reasons.

“This is our play-off game,” Davis said.  “We want to leave everything out there on the field as the seniors try to get their 6th win of the season.  The younger players want to play well for the seniors and to set the tone for the off-season.  Hyde Park will offer a great challenge.  They are a talented team who seems to be playing their best football of the season right now.”

San Antonio Christian Lions Claim Second Straight Title

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The San Marcos Academy Bears (5-4) fell Friday night on the road to the San Antonio Christian Lions (7-2) who claimed their second consecutive district title in the 39-0 victory.

The Lions scored their first points of the game with 11:13 left in the first quarter when Senior runningback Seth Kelly punched one in from 57 yards out. A successful PAT (Point After Touchdown) made the score 7-0 Lions. The Lions would hold the Bears to a 3 and out, and block the punt attempt for a safety to make the score 9-0 with 10:13 left in the first quarter. The two teams would trade field position, and not score for the remainder of the quarter.

Seniors Aubrey Oswalt, Cody Watson and Junior Michael Trejo, combined to tackle San Antonio Christian Junior Corey Robinson, son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson, in the Bears 39-0 loss.

The second quarter started with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Lions Quarterback Turner Goudge to Wide Receiver Spencer Woolfork. The Lions missed the extra point to keep the score at 15-0 with 11:55 left in the half. The Lions would strike again with 10 minutes left in the half when Goudge connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass. A successful PAT made the score 22-0, which would be the score at halftime.

Goudge threw his third touchdown pass of the night with 7:50 left in the third quarter to make the score 29-0 after a successful PAT. Goudge would kick a 29-yard field goal 5 minutes later to make the score 32-0.

Goudge threw his fourth and final touchdown pass on the night to Junior Corey Robinson , son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson. The 3-yard touchdown catch with 11:11 left in the game made the score 39-0, which was the final score.

The Bears had trouble moving the ball, totaling 99 yards of offense against the Lion’s defense. SMA Head Coach Les Davis stated after the game how proud he was despite the score.

SMA Fans, Erasmo Gutierrez and Eddy Haddad, are seen here cheering on the Bears in the 39-0 loss Friday night in San Antonio.

“Our kids played hard, playing against the premier team in our district” Davis said. “Our kids are fighting hard every week. We still have one more shot to make the playoffs.”

SMA Sophomore Brandon Cuevas, who hauled in the only 2 receptions of the night for the Bears, was proud of his teammates who are suffering through many injuries.

“Our team battled hard, and we looked good at times,” Cuevas Said. “Injuries have hurt us in the second half of the season”

SACS Head Coach Bryan Marmion believes his team could have played better tonight, and will look to improve in some key areas before the TAPPS playoffs begin.

“I am generally pleased with our team tonight,” Marmion said. “We played sloppy at the beginning of the game. We need to work on penalties, our pass percentage, and we had a few kids out tonight. We showed Jitters at times tonight (against SMA).”

San Marcos Academy Looks To Rebound Against Corpus Christi’s Pope John Paul II

          SAN MARCOS, TX

The San Marcos Academy Bears (5-1) look to rebound after their first loss of the season last week against the TMI-The Episcopal School. The Bears, playing at home for the first time since September 2, have a tough task ahead as they meet undefeated (6-0) John Paul II High School of Corpus Christie.

JP II Centurions have defeated 6 UIL opponents heading into the matchup with the Bears including Taft, San Diego, Bishop, Benavides, Falfurrias and Odem, scoring a combined 180 points, while only allowing 83. A pair of linebackers, David Carr and Rick Martinez, leads the Centurion’s defense.

Junior Michael Trejo is an important part of the 5-1 SMA Bears who are allowing just over 8 points per game on the season.

Junior Michael Trejo is an important part of the 5-1 SMA Bears who are allowing just over 8 points per game on the season.

Kyle, Texas, senior Austin Hay is looking forward to the opportunity to play the Centurions, and hopes to correct the mistakes made in Bears’ loss to TMI last week.

“Last week we fought hard and came up short,” Hay said. “We must cut out some of the mistakes we made, including the penalties. The Centurions are very good, and we have to limit our own mistakes.”

Junior quarterback Cole Williams will have an opportunity to improve on his 9 touchdown passes this year, while he continues to prove that he is a duel threat with his 8 rushing touchdowns on the season.

Junior runningback Estevan Gutierrez is averaging 12.95 yards per carry for the Bears, including 6 touchdowns on the year, and is also a team leader on defense.

The Bear defense continues to put pressure on opposing offenses with 14 sacks and a strong secondary, which has 8 interceptions on the year.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis said he was disappointed in the Bears’ performance last week, but believes the team will rebound.

“We did not perform well last week,” Davis said. “JPII is another good football team, so we better get ready. I know our kids will bounce back.”
