Podcast: Wrapping up the 2011 High School Regular Season in Hays County

Well, another regular season has come and gone in high school football. There were a few outstanding moments this year, especially the epic 28-27 barnburner between the Rebels and Lobos earlier in the year.

However, it’s time to get serious; It’s playoff time. Or, as we like to call it in Texas, “The Second Season”. In Hays County, a couple of teams have played well enough to earn a chance to continue their seasons.

In this podcast, I’ll discuss how a few Hays County high school football teams fared in 2011, as well as talk about both playoff bound teams.

SMA Ends Season With A Loss

SAN MARCOS, TX

The San Marcos Academy Bears (5-5) ended their season Friday night at A+ FCU-Ingram Stadium losing to the Hyde Park Baptist Panthers 31-7. The Panthers improve to 6-4 on the year. The event, which was “Senior Night” for the Bears, marked the second consecutive year the Bears season has ended with a loss to the Panthers.

The Bears and Panthers traded punts to start the game, as the running game grinded the first quarter clock. The Panthers struck first with a 6-yard touchdown run by Daniel King with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter. The PAT by Junior Jansen Tapia made the score 7-0 Panthers going into the 2nd quarter.

Bear Junior running back Estevan Gutierrez had a 50 yard run with 11:25 left in the second quarter. This would set up a Ricardo Amescua 1 yard touchdown with 7:16 left. Gutierrez, kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7.

Junior Estevan Gutierrez rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries during the Bears season finale friday night against Austin Hyde Park. The Bears ended the season at 5-5, with Gutierrez rushing for close to 600 yards with 9 touchdowns on the season.

A sideline infraction penalty by the Bears set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Junior Daniel King. A successful PAT by Tapia put the panthers up 14-7.

The Panthers scored with 46.2 seconds left in the half on a 21 yard pass from Freshman David Dunkin to Sophomore Ryan Roberts. A successful PAT made the score 21-7.

The Bears had a chance to score, after a Hyde Park unsportsmanlike penalty, but Quarteback Cole Williams threw an interception with 8 seconds left to go into the half down 21-7.

The Bears held the Panthers on their first possession of the half. The Bears were not able to capitalize on the defensive stop. Tapia added a 25-yard field goal for the Panthers with 3:38 left in the third quarter making the score 24-7 Panthers.

Panther Sophomore Jackson Effiom scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with 11:55 left in the game to extend the panther lead to 31-7 after a successful PAT.

San Marcos Academy Coach Les Davis was proud of his team despite the loss on Senior night.

“We had some great efforts from our players this year,” Davis said. “They should be proud of their season. Their effort was good tonight, despite being out of bullets due to injuries.”

Sabas Castillo, SMA Offensive and Defensive lineman from San Marcos,TX believes the team is strong going forward.

“Our seniors laid good groundwork for the foundation of this program,” Castillo said. “That has shown with our seniors having a winning season two out of the last three season, with one playoff appearance.”

UIL mandates change in “Two-a-day” practices

With the increase of injuries suffered by high school students in recent years, as well as the increasing heat that seems to oppress the state during summer months, the University Interscholastic League has mandated that changes be made to “two-a-day” practices, according to Kxan.com.

For those who are not familiar with the term: “Two-a-days” are where sports teams conduct two separate practice sessions in one day. Normally, most tw0-a-days consist of having a morning practice and then an evening practice, with Football being the sport that is synonymous with the ideology of having two practices in one day.

The changes, which will go in effect August, 2012, include:

  • Limiting the type of practice during the second session in two-a-day practices to non-contact, non-conditioning sessions
  • Allowing a longer period of time for students to recover after the first practice to 2 hours (the previous was a one hour break)
  • Forbidding schools to schedule consecutive two-a-day practices, whether before or during the season

This change in practice methods is due in part to High School leagues following the example of the NFL and NCAA, which are taking a much more defined stance to prevent serious head injuries. According to a 11 year study, compiled in 2011 by the American Journal of Sports Medicine:

“In sum, 2651 concussions were observed in 10 926 892 athlete-exposures, with an incidence rate of 0.24 per 1000. Boys’ sports accounted for 53% of athlete-exposures and 75% of all concussions. Football accounted for more than half of all concussions, and it had the highest incidence rate (0.60)… Concussion rate increased 4.2-fold…over the 11 years (15.5% annual increase). In similar boys’ and girls’ sports (baseball/softball, basketball, and soccer), girls had roughly twice the concussion risk of boys. Concussion rate increased over time in all 12 sports.”-Andrew E. Lincoln, ScD; Shane V. Caswell, PhD ATC; John L. Almquist, VATL ATC, et al. American Journal of Sports Medicine, May 2011, Vol. 39, No.5

While this may not be popular with coaches around the state, this kind of change is necessary for high school sports in Texas. Safety should be in the minds of all who govern and are in charge of these young athletes. Hopefully, with the limitations in place, high school sports can be just a little bit safer for all.

SMA Bears Rally Falls Short

The San Marcos Academy Bears (5-2) lost 35-23 Friday night at A+ FCU-Ingram Stadium to a Pope John Paul II Centurion team, which has defeated 6 UIL opponents and the Bears on their way to a perfect 7-0 record.

The Bears took an early 3-0 lead with 7:18 left in the first on a 29-yard field goal by Senior Memo Borrego.

Centurion Senior Albert Cansino scored the first points for the team from Corpus, on a 1 yard touchdown run, with 2:35 left in the first quarter and a successful PAT made the score 7-3. Cansino scored again right before the end of the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-3 going into the second quarter.

Senior Centurion linebacker Rick Martinez recovered a Bear fumble with 11:03 left in the half to extend the lead to 21-3 after a successful PAT.

Quarterback Cole Williams fumbled one second later on the ensuing kickoff, with the Centurions recovered on the Bears 23-yard line. It took the Centurions one play to score on a 23-yard pass to De Los Santos, to extend the lead to 28-3 with 10:55 left in the half.

Junior runningback Estevan Gutierrez punched in a touchdown from 1 yard out with 4:53 left, and a successful PAT trimmed the Centurion lead at 28-10, which was the score going into half time after the Bears stopped a late centurion charge.

SMA quarterback Williams did not return for the 2nd half for the Bears due to injuries, as did many other Bears.

SMA Junior Michael Trejo returned a Centurion fumble for a 59-yard touchdown, and a successful PAT by Borrego mage the score 28-17.

Senior Brett Mackall hauled in a 4-yard touchdown catch from backup quarterback Ricardo Amescua with 7:35 left in the 4th quarter, a 2-PT conversion was no good, and the score remained 28-23. Amescua, stated his confidence in the second half play.

“We played very well in the second half,” Amescua said. “We showed great heart as a team, and our offensive line helped greatly.”

The Bears recovered fumble with 6:49 left in the 4th, but were unable to capitalize and punted with 5:44 left. The Centurions recovered on their own 31-yard line. The Bears defense was unable to stop the running game, as Quarterback Blake McKinzie scored from 4 yards out, and a successful PAT made the score 35-23, which was the final score.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis was proud of his team, and the effort they put out.

“In all my years of coaching, I have never been more proud of a team,” Davis said. “We came back well and we played old fashioned ironman football. “Words zcannot express how proud I am of this team, and the effort they showed tonight.

Texas Military Institute Ends San Marcos Academy’s Winning Streak

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The Texas Military Institute Panthers (2-5) upset the San Marcos Academy Bears 19-7 in San Antonio Thursday night handing the Bears their first loss of season, and first district loss.

SMA (5-1) began the season on a 5 game winning streak, which was interrupted by the bye week, which may have cost the Bears some momentum going forward.

The Bears started slow, gaining only 4 yards in the first quarter, on multiple possessions. Multiple penalties cost the Bears field possession, which the Panthers capitalized on early in the game.

Panther senior running back Milton Black scored the games first points with 8:39 left in the first to make the score 7-0 after a successful extra point. Junior Panther quarterback Drew Fox extended the lead with 14:04 left in the 2nd quarter on a 21-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 13-0. Bear lineman Sabas Castillo blocked the extra point attempt.

The Bears defense came up short on a controversial 4th and Goal play on the Panther 1 yard line, when Black punched in his second touchdown of the game to make the score 19-0 after an unsuccessful 2-point conversion.

Junior quarterback Cole Williams, scored the Bears only points of the night on a 47 yard touchdown run during the second quarter of the Bears 19-7 loss, which was the Bears first loss of the season.

Cole Williams scored the only points of the night for the Bears with 8:29 left in the 2nd quarter on a 47 yard touchdown run to make the score 19-7, after a successful PAT.

Senior Aubrey Oswalt, grabbed his district leading 4th interception of the season with 7:47 left in the half, to give SMA a chance to trim the lead, which came up short after an unsuccessful Bear drive in the red zone.

Senior Aubrey Oswalt intercepted his district leading 4th pass late in the 2nd quarter to give the Bears a chance to trim the 19-7 lead, which ended up being the final score, handing the Bears their first loss of the season.

The Bears went into halftime losing 19-7 with multiple injuries, including senior linebacker Richard Smith, and junior lineman Marshall Benson, who are key components to the Bears defense, which has not allowed 19 points all season in any one game.

Grimaldo DaRocha recovered a fumble for the Bears with 11:10 left in the 3rd quarter, but the Bears were not able to capitalize. The two defenses continued to now allow either team to score, however the Bears offense could not help out the strong defense. Junior quarterback Cole Williams threw an interception with 8:34 left in the game, which sealed the deal for the game as the Panthers would run out a large majority of the clock.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis, stated his disappointment in the Bears, but took full responsibility for the loss.

“Unfortunately I did a poor job of getting this team prepared,” Davis said. “TMI outplayed, and outcoached us in every aspect of the game. They did everything they needed to do to win, and we did not. “

SMA Bears Look To Continue Win Streak

The San Marcos Academy Bears will look to continue their winning ways in a Thursday night matchup on the road against Texas Military Institute.

SMA (5-0) is coming off a bye week, most recently defeated UIL Louise 33-14.  TMI (1-5) has struggled this season after winning their home opener against St. Joseph. The Panthers have lost in consecutive weeks to Holy Cross, Falls City, Cole, Randolph and La Pryor.

The Bears are averaging 133.4 passing yards per game and 229.2 rushing yards per game, resulting in an average of 39.4 points per game for the undefeated team.

The Bears defense has also been a strong part of their success, allowing 9 points per game and averaging almost 3 sacks per game. Senior Richard Smith leads the team with 42 total tackles followed by junior Estevan Gutierrez and senior Sabas Castillo at 35 and 26 respectively. Castillo and junior Marshall Benson are tied for the team lead in sacks with 3 each. The Bears have also grabbed 7 interceptions with seniors Aubrey Oswalt and Devante Williams accounting for 3 and 2 respectively. Williams said he is excited to get to play the Panthers and look to extend the Bear’s winning streak.

Senior Richard Smith leads a strong SMA defense that is allowing 9 points per game, resulting in their 5-0 record. The Bears take on the Texas Military Institute Panthers Thursday night at 7:00 PM at the panthers home field in San Antonio.

“We have played some great football so far this season which has kept us undefeated up to this point,” Williams said. “As long as we play the football that we are capable of playing we should come out victorious.”

Last year, the Bears dropped a 27-13 decision to the Panthers in a hard fought game. SMA Head Coach Les Davis said he knows that beating TMI will not be an easy task.

“TMI will be a good test for us as we begin district play,” Davis said. “They are always a very physical, hard-nosed and aggressive football team.”

Kickoff between the Bears and Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m.at TMI’s San Antonio campus.
