The Cow Classic, while hosted by Chick-fil-A San Marcos, is a community team effort made possible with the support from Sports Marketing Experts and Rivercity Sportswear, both hailing from San Marcos. “It’s really a fun way not only to help raise money for worth San Marcos programs, but also to live out CFA San Marcos’ motto of ‘nourishing the heart while serving the community’,” said owner/operator Jon Sprencel.

Joe Lunz, principal of Hill Country Christian School, stated, “Our motto has long been to reach young people to be ethical, moral leaders. And when Chick-fil-A moved into town, we knew we wanted a relationship with a company that fulfilled the desire we have. To us, they are much more than just the place to get the best chicken sandwich.”

Marla Johnson, Executive Director of HCWC, encourages all golfers to register for the Cow Classic, because, “proceeds we receive will serve victims of family violence, sexual assault and child abuse right here in Hays and Caldwell counties.” C.A.S.A stated that their usage of the money would be, “able to serve more children in our community by recruiting and training our volunteers.”

SMA’s Oswalt signs with Oklahoma Panhandle State

San Marcos, TX- Boys covered in sweat and dirt, playing pickup games of football can’t wait to be old enough to put on the pads and play in a real game. Some are fortunate enough to play past the high school level, including San Marcos Academy Senior Aubrey Oswalt, who signed his national letter of intent Thursday.

Oswalt, who played Quarterback and Cornerback for the Bears, chose to play for the NCAA Division II Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies, coming full circle from his pickup games and 6-man football games, which he began at an early age said his father Ron Oswalt.

“He started in Houston in the fourth grade playing Junior High football early for the Texas Christian Tigers, and he excelled as soon as he touched the ball,” said his father, CEO of Sports Marketing Experts. “He wanted to keep up with the Junior High and Varsity teams in two-a-days who were anywhere from 3 to 7 years older than him.”

Oswalt, who led the Bears with 3 interceptions this year, including a 52 yard one returned for a touchdown vs. the Texas School for the Deaf Rangers of Austin, is excited to fulfill his dream of playing college football.

“I am proud that Aubrey will have this opportunity to further his education and pursue his dream of playing at the next level,” said SMA Head Coach Les Davis.

This year, Oswalt was selected for the SportsMarketingExpert.Com Bowl in Houston as both an offensive and defensive player. During this game, Oswalt went on to receive the “Spirit Award”. He also was named the Upperhand Promotions Texas High School Player of the Week and San Marcos Academy’s Defensive Player of the Week.

“Aubrey Oswalt has great football awareness,” said former Air Force and Texas Tech coach and current Hyde Park Baptist Head Coach Dean Campbell. “As a defensive back, he has the ability to see the ball out of the QB’s hand and take good angles to the football. He has great ball skills when the ball is coming his way and he has a knack for getting his hands on the ball.”

Oswalt looked at various schools, but in the end decided OPSU was the place he wanted to continue his education and football playing career.

“After meeting the coaches and players at OPSU, I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of this program,” Oswalt said. “I am excited to not only work hard on the field, but off the field as well and obtain a quality education. I am also thankful for the support of ‘Athletes 4 Tomorrow’ and their support during the recruitment process.”

Oswalt is set to enroll in the marketing program at OPSU this upcoming summer, getting an early start to both academics and athletics, which excited Oklahoma Panhandle State University Head Coach Jon Lyles.

We look forward to Aubrey coming to OPSU and immediately contributing to our program,” said Lyles. “We are excited about the influx of Texas football players like Oswalt deciding to be Aggies in Oklahoma. His decision to enroll earlyhas our staff very excited. He has a great deal of talent, and we are looking forward to honing the skills he has picked up during his years of experience into something special.”

The Aggies open their 2012 football schedule on Sept. 1st against the Missouri University S&T Miners, a Great Lakes Valley Conference member in Rolla, Missouri.

Podcast: Wrapping up the HS postseason, getting ready for the NCAA’s

After a lengthy lead-up, it’s finally time to delve into the College Conferece Tournament season. Dreams of NCAA tournament bids can be won and lost within this hectic week of basketball. It’s a good barometer for many schools to find out if their team is ready for the rigors of the “Big Dance”.

In the podcast this week, I’ll start by wrapping up the High School basketball season in Hays County, then get into the conference tourneys for the Men’s and Women’s teams in Texas.

Correction: I incorrectly identified Lamar University as the “Cardinal” in the podcast. They are the “Cardinals”, apologies for the mistake.

Podcast: Basketball heading into the postseason

Some surprises and interesting developments came through this week in all levels of basketball.

Once again, it’s another all basketball podcast, where both the High School and College games are winding down their seasons.

Enjoy!

Podcast: Wrapping up the 2011 High School Regular Season in Hays County

Well, another regular season has come and gone in high school football. There were a few outstanding moments this year, especially the epic 28-27 barnburner between the Rebels and Lobos earlier in the year.

However, it’s time to get serious; It’s playoff time. Or, as we like to call it in Texas, “The Second Season”. In Hays County, a couple of teams have played well enough to earn a chance to continue their seasons.

In this podcast, I’ll discuss how a few Hays County high school football teams fared in 2011, as well as talk about both playoff bound teams.

SMA Ends Season With A Loss

SAN MARCOS, TX

The San Marcos Academy Bears (5-5) ended their season Friday night at A+ FCU-Ingram Stadium losing to the Hyde Park Baptist Panthers 31-7. The Panthers improve to 6-4 on the year. The event, which was “Senior Night” for the Bears, marked the second consecutive year the Bears season has ended with a loss to the Panthers.

The Bears and Panthers traded punts to start the game, as the running game grinded the first quarter clock. The Panthers struck first with a 6-yard touchdown run by Daniel King with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter. The PAT by Junior Jansen Tapia made the score 7-0 Panthers going into the 2nd quarter.

Bear Junior running back Estevan Gutierrez had a 50 yard run with 11:25 left in the second quarter. This would set up a Ricardo Amescua 1 yard touchdown with 7:16 left. Gutierrez, kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7.

Junior Estevan Gutierrez rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries during the Bears season finale friday night against Austin Hyde Park. The Bears ended the season at 5-5, with Gutierrez rushing for close to 600 yards with 9 touchdowns on the season.

A sideline infraction penalty by the Bears set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Junior Daniel King. A successful PAT by Tapia put the panthers up 14-7.

The Panthers scored with 46.2 seconds left in the half on a 21 yard pass from Freshman David Dunkin to Sophomore Ryan Roberts. A successful PAT made the score 21-7.

The Bears had a chance to score, after a Hyde Park unsportsmanlike penalty, but Quarteback Cole Williams threw an interception with 8 seconds left to go into the half down 21-7.

The Bears held the Panthers on their first possession of the half. The Bears were not able to capitalize on the defensive stop. Tapia added a 25-yard field goal for the Panthers with 3:38 left in the third quarter making the score 24-7 Panthers.

Panther Sophomore Jackson Effiom scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with 11:55 left in the game to extend the panther lead to 31-7 after a successful PAT.

San Marcos Academy Coach Les Davis was proud of his team despite the loss on Senior night.

“We had some great efforts from our players this year,” Davis said. “They should be proud of their season. Their effort was good tonight, despite being out of bullets due to injuries.”

Sabas Castillo, SMA Offensive and Defensive lineman from San Marcos,TX believes the team is strong going forward.

“Our seniors laid good groundwork for the foundation of this program,” Castillo said. “That has shown with our seniors having a winning season two out of the last three season, with one playoff appearance.”
