Robert Griffin III to enter NFL Draft

According to multiple sources, the 2011 Heisman Trophy Winner Robert Griffin III (RG3) will enter his name into the NFL Draft. Griffin had until January 15th to make a decision on entering.

There has not been an official decision made from RG3 himself, but according to his father, Robert Griffin II, via ESPN:

”I met with my son (Friday) and his schedule is pretty much he will attend the Sugar Bowl here in New Orleans (where the Griffins live), then next weekend he will meet with five agents and select the right agent to represent him and plan a good pre-draft process…After that he will sit down with three of his coaches at Baylor on Wednesday or Thursday (Jan. 11 or 12) and make it official.”

As I mentioned in my last podcast, I felt that Griffin would be better suited moving on to the next level and competing in the NFL. I’m still convinced that RG3 has nothing  more to prove at the college level; He has already attained the sports highest honor and the only thing more is vying for a Championship.

If the wild Alamo Bowl was the last time we see RG3 in a Baylor uni, then he will finish with a career stat line of a 66%  completion percentage, 10,366 passing yards, 78 TD’s and 17 INT; 2,257 rushing yards and 33 rushing TD’s.

Griffin reset many individual stat records at Baylor, becoming the all-time leader in at least 17 categories. The most impressive being the all-time leader in passing yards in a career (10,366), in a single season (4,293 in 2011, breaking his own mark of 3,501 in 2010), most passing touchdowns in a career (78) and in a season (37 in 2011, breaking his mark of 22 in 2010).

Podcast: Baylor and Texas cap off seasons with Bowl wins

One team utilized a stellar defensive effort to win. The other decided that an offensive explosion was more necessary.

In any case, both Texas and Baylor fought hard and got well earned bowl victories this week; The final week of the 2011 calendar year.

With the wins, the State of Texas is now 3 for 3 in bowl games, with Texas A&M, Houston and SMU playing their games within the next seven days.

So, as 2011 comes to a close, here is the final podcast of the year; In it, I’ll talk about Texas and Baylor’s bowl wins.

Halftime: Texas looks shaky, still leads 7-3

Let’s be frank: Texas’ offense has not really shown any of the hoped progression I mentioned in the podcast so far.

One aspect that has hurt Texas is that the playcalling of the offense has been mediocre at best; OC Bryan Harsin has played this one rather safe, seemingly trying to keep Ash from making mistakes. Texas pass offense was way too horizontal in the opening part of the ball game, with a lot of screens and throw back passes being executed. It wasn’t until Texas got a break via a bad punt from Cal that the pass offense began to open up. Quarterback David Ash finally connected with Wide Receiver Jaxon Shipley and Tight End Blaine Irby, helping Texas go 48 yards on 4 plays, capped off with a 4 yard TD pass from Shipley to Ash.

Another is that the Cal defense has played their part well this evening, showing why they are one of the top 30 defenses in the FBS. Texas touted rush attack has only managed 4 total yards in the half. Ash leads the Horns with 10 yards, while Halfbacks Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown have combined for 0 yards (Bergeron with 2, Brown -2). While we’re on the subject of defense, give props to DC Manny Diaz and the Texas defense for halting the strong Cal offense in the 1st.

QB Zach Maynard is 9/18 for 67 yards and has thrown for an interception, while Cal’s rush game has likewise been stymied. Isi Sofele has 39 yards, C.J Anderson has 4.

The defenses have ruled the field thus far, with both teams offenses’ struggling mightily all night. What this game will come down to is which defense can continue their excemplary efforts and avoid giving up a big play.

For Texas, the question becomes: If Ash continues to struggle through the air, will Case McCoy get a chance in the 2nd half? He did not see a snap in the 1st, despite Ash’s issues and inefficiencies, much to the chagrin of Longhorn fans. If Ash cannot get things done, McCoy must see the field.

Podcast: Texas vies for Holiday Bowl victory

In a normal season on the 40 Acres, a 7-5 record and in the Holiday Bowl for the 5th time in 11 seasons is seen as a large disappointment. However, after last season’s awful 5-7 disaster of a season, many fans are more than happy just to see Texas bowling once again.

Texas return to the bowl ranks will be against California, a team of which the ‘Horns have not played since 1970. This will only be the fifth meeting all-time between both prestigous schools, with Texas sporting a perfect 4-0 record against Cal.

In this podcast, I’ll talk about how Texas can improve their record to 5-0 on the Bears in the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.

This week marks the first full slate of games for the 2011 College Bowl Season.

Wednesday marks the first night in which a representative from Texas will play in a bowl game. TCU (10-2, 7-0 in Mountain West Conference) will face off against Louisiana Tech (8-4, 6-1 in Western Athletic Conference) in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

For this podcast, I’ll give a brief synopsis on what to expect from these two outstanding ball clubs. And hey, when was the last time you saw a pre-Christmas bowl that had two above .500 Conference Champs?

Podcast: Wimberley takes State Championship

It’s been a long and winding road, something of which was  two years in the making, but the Wimberley Texans finally accomplished their ultimate goal: Winning a State Championship.

The Texans tenacity, aptitude and knack for stepping up in the clutch helped them defeat Argyle 21-14 in Arlington on Friday.

But how did they do it? How did Wimberley get by an experienced Argyle ball club? In this podcast, I’ll describe what the Texans did to clinch the 3A Division II crown.
