Bobby Petrino needed to go

While some people might ask, “Why was Bobby Petrino fired from Arkansas?”, I’m in the mind set of, “Why should Arkansas keep him around?”

The guy lied to police on his April 2nd accident, failing to report that he had a female passenger on the bike he was riding. Petrino then denied that he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with the female passenger, not acknowledging that they had been involved for some time. Then, the “coup de grace” of it all, he would not accept any penalties or punishments that Arkansas wanted him to have, so as to keep his job.

It’s seemed that Petrino was uncooperative in just about every aspect of this entire saga. I applaud Arkansas for stepping up and making a quick, rational decision about letting this guy go. He may be a good football coach, but no school should allow a person of that personality to teach and mold young people.

Perfection: Lady Bears finish season 40-0

Perfection is something of which we all try to attain in our lives. Normally, it is a difficult task to ascertain, as there are many pitfalls that derail perfection.

In sports, perfection is much more difficult to grasp, especially so in basketball. The amount of games and the lengthy schedule almost always negates the ability for a team to finish undefeated.

This is why Baylor’s run to perfection has amazed and astounded so many. The Lady Bears just won games. During this magical run, they continued to talk about getting to, and winning the National Championship. The pursuit of the undefeated season was something Head Coach Kim Mulkey did not allow her players to think about. They just wanted to avenge the loss to Texas A&M in the Elite 8 last season; Perfection was a secondary goal. Hence the mantra, “Unfinished Business”.

However, as the season wore on, people began to notice just how special this team was. Not only were the Lady Bears winning games, but they were flat out dominating teams. The closest game Baylor had this year was against rival A&M on February 27th. It took almost the entire season for Baylor to find themselves in a close contest! In fact, Baylor’s margin of victory during the 2012 season was a staggering average of 26 points per game.

They placed much of their hopes and dreams on the shoulders of Junior C Brittany Griner. Her season average of 23 points per game, 9 rebounds per game allowed her to win the Player of the Year award in Women’s College Basketball. However, her contributions were a part of the reason for the resounding success Baylor has enjoyed. Teams revolved their entire game plans to just stopping Brittany Griner. The thing is: Even with a good strategy and multiple defenders in her face, she still kept scoring and winning.

Therefore, much more of the credit for this historic moment in sports history goes to Coach Kim Mulkey. Her coaching style and savvy game management are reasons why she led her second team at Baylor to a National Championship. However, her ability to recruit well and understand talent has been a great asset to the development of this team. Bringing in role players such as Odyssey Sims and Kimetria Hayden helped bolster the offense. It was evident that Mulkey utilized Hayden and Sims as perimeter threats, so as to round out the inside prowess of Griner.

This stratagem showed itself in the 80-61 victory against Notre Dame on Tuesday. The Irish got to Griner early, placing tremendous amounts of pressure, forcing Baylor to beat them from outside the paint. Sims and Hayden stepped up and combined for 21 points, forcing the Irish to heed more attention to them and open the flood gates for Griner in the second half.

Indeed, this team will be remembered for it’s remarkable ability to win and win well. That’s why it’s important to keep this team in mind when talking about perfection. For all of the failure that the pursuit of pure excellence brings, Baylor’s Lady Bears went against it and proved it all wrong.

Sometimes, even logic doesn’t explain everything. The 2012 Lady Bears have defied all logic.

Podcast: The Final Four and US Men’s Soccer

8 teams from Texas participated in March Madness this year. Only one team remains in the running for a national championship.

In this podcast, I’ll talk about the Baylor Men’s squad and their loss to Kentucky, as well as give my thoughts on who will win the Men’s National Championship this year. In the Women’s bracket, I’ll talk about the lone Texas team still playing, the Baylor Lady Bears, and chronicle what they must do to keep their pursuit of perfection alive.

Finally, I breakaway from basketball talk and give some thoughts about the US Men’s Soccer program and a colossal failure they endured this week.

Enjoy.

SMA’s Oswalt signs with Oklahoma Panhandle State

San Marcos, TX- Boys covered in sweat and dirt, playing pickup games of football can’t wait to be old enough to put on the pads and play in a real game. Some are fortunate enough to play past the high school level, including San Marcos Academy Senior Aubrey Oswalt, who signed his national letter of intent Thursday.

Oswalt, who played Quarterback and Cornerback for the Bears, chose to play for the NCAA Division II Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies, coming full circle from his pickup games and 6-man football games, which he began at an early age said his father Ron Oswalt.

“He started in Houston in the fourth grade playing Junior High football early for the Texas Christian Tigers, and he excelled as soon as he touched the ball,” said his father, CEO of Sports Marketing Experts. “He wanted to keep up with the Junior High and Varsity teams in two-a-days who were anywhere from 3 to 7 years older than him.”

Oswalt, who led the Bears with 3 interceptions this year, including a 52 yard one returned for a touchdown vs. the Texas School for the Deaf Rangers of Austin, is excited to fulfill his dream of playing college football.

“I am proud that Aubrey will have this opportunity to further his education and pursue his dream of playing at the next level,” said SMA Head Coach Les Davis.

This year, Oswalt was selected for the SportsMarketingExpert.Com Bowl in Houston as both an offensive and defensive player. During this game, Oswalt went on to receive the “Spirit Award”. He also was named the Upperhand Promotions Texas High School Player of the Week and San Marcos Academy’s Defensive Player of the Week.

“Aubrey Oswalt has great football awareness,” said former Air Force and Texas Tech coach and current Hyde Park Baptist Head Coach Dean Campbell. “As a defensive back, he has the ability to see the ball out of the QB’s hand and take good angles to the football. He has great ball skills when the ball is coming his way and he has a knack for getting his hands on the ball.”

Oswalt looked at various schools, but in the end decided OPSU was the place he wanted to continue his education and football playing career.

“After meeting the coaches and players at OPSU, I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of this program,” Oswalt said. “I am excited to not only work hard on the field, but off the field as well and obtain a quality education. I am also thankful for the support of ‘Athletes 4 Tomorrow’ and their support during the recruitment process.”

Oswalt is set to enroll in the marketing program at OPSU this upcoming summer, getting an early start to both academics and athletics, which excited Oklahoma Panhandle State University Head Coach Jon Lyles.

We look forward to Aubrey coming to OPSU and immediately contributing to our program,” said Lyles. “We are excited about the influx of Texas football players like Oswalt deciding to be Aggies in Oklahoma. His decision to enroll earlyhas our staff very excited. He has a great deal of talent, and we are looking forward to honing the skills he has picked up during his years of experience into something special.”

The Aggies open their 2012 football schedule on Sept. 1st against the Missouri University S&T Miners, a Great Lakes Valley Conference member in Rolla, Missouri.
