SAN MARCOS, TX – The overflow crowd at Ingram/A+FCU Stadium witnessed
the Bears of San Marcos Academy dominate the Bengals of San Antonio Brooks by a
score of 21-0. The Bears dominated every aspect of the game led by a strong defense
supported by Cameron Whitehead, Sabas Castillo and Estevan Gutierrez.
Earlier in the week SMA Head Coach Les Davis said, ‘“I hope that our second-half team
shows up at the beginning of the game this week “I know we grew as a football team last
week. Our main goal for this game is to eliminate the mistakes and learn to play with
confidence as a team.” However, mistakes and miscues and poor tackling haunted the
Bears.
The Bears would score first as SMA Quarterback Jonathan Powell would pitch on the
right side to Ty Merriweather on a 24-yard touchdown run and Memo Borrego added the
point after touchdown (PAT) for a 7-0 lead.
Borrego would add a 45-yard punt to keep the Bengals on their heels in first quarter
action. The Bears would strike once again in the second quarter as they drove 57 yards
behind Quarterback Aubrey Oswalt as he handed the ball up the middle to Merriweather
on his second score of the evening. Borrego added another PAT for a 14-0 lead at the
half.
The Bears and Bengals both rushed the ball 29 times each however, it would be the
Bears that rolled up 178 yards to only 69 for the Bengals. The Bengals passed for 5-8
for 63 yards compared to 4-11 for only 28 yards for the home team. The Bears receivers
struggled all night catching the slick ball on a wet field.
The Bears remained dominate as Powell would scamper on a 35-yard quarterback keeper
with 2:40 left in the third quarter for a 21-0 deciding factor.
Bears Wide Receiver Alex Ashley said, “We executed the plays better as a team, the
defense made big plays we put pressure on them the entire night.”
SMA Head Coach Les Davis said postgame, “We are still learning to play the game the
right way. Offensively, when we executed we played good, but we made too many silly
penalties. Defensively, we need to tackle better.”
The Bears 1-1 return to action next week on the road versus Austin St. Austin Dominic.
The Bears return home on September 17, 2010 versus the Rangers from Texas School of
the Deaf.
